A lot of first time visitors, do not understand that Jaco Beach has black sand, when they first arrive, they seem to immediately think that the beach is dirty. This is not the case, although it can sometimes look like mud when you are walking around, it rinses off just like sand.
It takes a little bit to get to used too, but is also beautiful at the same time. I wasn’t able to find a close up of the sand (I will create my own video next time), but the video I found does give you an idea of how the sand looks.
** WARNING ** – As of April 2016 there has been some extreme rip currents in the area. Stay in shallow water and make sure you are a good swimmer. If you get caught in a rip current, don’t fight it, swim with the current to you are out of the direct rip (let this infographic help you)
